AN OVERVIEW OF SELF-MEDICATION PRACTICES

    INTRODUCTION

Everyday,we practice self-medication in form of self-care. The practice is common worldwide in developed,underdeveloped and developing countries.

DEFINITION

Self-Medication is the selection and use of medication without prescription by an authorized prescribe.

It is also the use or intake of drugs,herbs to treat self-recognized or self-diagnosed conditions or symptoms.

SOURCES OF SELF-MEDICATION
Friends
Families
Neighbors: people use dosage as prescribed to others thinking the same symptoms means same ailment which is mostly wrong.
Chemist
Suggestions from an advertisement (media or roadside).

DRUGS MOSTLY ABUSED
1. Analgesics or pain reliever i.e paracetamol,ibuprofen amongst others.
2. Cough remedies i.e Cough syrups
3.Antbiotics i.e Ampiclox,amoxyl etc.

WHY DO PEOPLE SELF-MEDICATE
1. Poverty: consultation fee prevents some people from going to hospital
2. Ignorance
3. Waiting time at the hospital, especially General Hospitals.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF SELF-MEDICATION

1. INDIVIDUAL LEVEL
a. Convenience: It eradicates the need to wait before being attended to by the medical practitioner.
b. Economic benefit,particularly since medical consultation fee will be reduced or avoided.

2. COMMUNITY LEVEL
a. Reduce the cost of community funded health care programmed
b. Reduces the pressure on medical workers.

RISK
1. Inaccurate diagnosis: under-usage or over-usage.
2. Risk of abuse: Inability to do somethings without the intake.
3. Drug interaction: Anti-malaria and Vitamin C are bad combination of dosage.
4. Allergic reaction: some people don’t know their allergies and therefore use without knowing e.g Chloroquine.
5. Death

SOLUTION
Anyone that intends to self-medicate must have knowledge of its dosage,time of intake,side effect(s),allergy(ies) etc,to avoid complications
